Here’s how you can enable the new Gmail web interface

The new Gmail that was announced a few days back is now being released to public. The new interface is very much influenced by the Material design, where the squares are now transformed into pills. New interface does brings in handful of new features. Features like “confidential mode“, email snoozing, can be very useful for the masses.

The new redesign does comes with a better integration of Google Calendar, Google Keep and other Google Apps. Google is pushing the update in phases and there is no hard deadline as to when the update will be fully available.

Here’s how you can check out the new Gmail interface right away:

  • Login to your Gmail Web account.
  • In the top-right corner, you might see a gear icon. Click it.
  • If the update is made available for your account, you will see option for “Try the new Gmail“, at the very top. Click it.
  • The page will reload, the new design will load where in you can choose the density
    • The view will be set to “Default” where in you can see a little more info about each mail like the type of attachments.
    • Then there is “Comfortable” and “Compact“.
  • The density or view can be changed by clicking on the gear icon and then Display density.
  • Click Ok and you are on the new update.

Don’t panic if you don’t like it, you can revert back to the old version by simply clicking on the gear icon and then choosing the first option “Go back to Classic Gmail”.

This “switch to new Gmail” option might not be available to everyone right now, so hang tight it will be available over the course of few weeks.
